Eighty-five percent of students come from outside Maine and have experienced a quality high school education at public and independent schools. They are likely to be creative thinkers or performers in dance, theatre, music and fine arts. They are excellent writers and speakers and write many provocative articles for literary magazines published at Bowdoin.

Bowdoin College is located on the coast of Maine, 26 miles from Portland. Brunswick is a quaint town of 20,000 people, with cobblestone streets and many restaurants that are friendly to students. Bowdoin owns Orr Island, 13 miles away on the coast, where students frequently participate in geology and marine research.
