Brandeis is located on the beltway surrounding Boston, Route 95, formerly called Route 128. A commuter train stop is located near the Brandeis athletic fields on South Street, so students explore Boston and vicinity. The campus is built on 235 acres of rolling hills, referred to as an upper and lower campus. The buildings are modern, rectangular structures, with the exception of the circular theatre building and the Usen Castle.
The castle is an iconic building that houses sophomores and is located on a higher elevation overlooking the campus. A new building under construction will overshadow the castle with its height: it’s slated to house the humanities. There are three distinctive architectural houses of worship which visually relay the spiritual egalitarian views that exist on this campus: a Catholic, Jewish and Protestant chapel, in addition to a Muslim prayer room.
(The academic calendar is arranged so as to permit students of a particular faith to celebrate their holidays.) Jewish holidays and Chabad services are celebrated. Students appreciate the open acceptance of Jewish lifestyle, philosophy and religion. The dining room has a distinct section for kosher dining and another section for American-style food. It’s typical to see a Rabbi mingling with Jewish students during lunch. This is part of the Brandeis experience.
