Several Options to Pay College

You can pay for college in more ways than you might expect! Estimating the cost of college is only one step. Another step is figuring out how much you can afford to pay. If college costs are more than you can afford, your remaining step is finding the money to pay the difference.
You’re not alone in trying to find the money you need. Colleges work hard to provide you and your family as much support as possible. The government helps too, as do other sources. With good planning, some hard work, and, yes, a bit of luck, you may be able to afford a wide choice of colleges!
The different ways you can pay for college fall into five categories: family savings and income, payment plans, grants and scholarships, loans, and work. Most students pay for college using some combination of these financial resources.
The money to pay for college may come from both you and your family. Your parents’ salaries may be enough to pay for your college costs, depending on the college and available payment plans. Some parents are able to set up a college savings fund for their kids.
Grants and scholarships provide money that you usually do not need to repay. You may need to make a certain commitment in order to receive this funding. For instance, programs such as ROTC cover some of your expenses in exchange for taking on a military service commitment.
Loans are funds that you borrow from others. You are expected to pay back this money over a period of time. Some loans must be repaid quickly, but others can be repaid over many years.
Another way to help pay for your education is by working your way through college. Whether you go to college full time or part time while working will depend on how much money you need, the kind of student you are, and the kind of job you have.
Many colleges have work-study programs that provide students with jobs on campus. Such programs either pay you a wage for your work or allow you to work in exchange for tuition and other expenses.
