What is Financial Aid?

The majority of students need some sort of help paying for college. Every college has a financial aid office that works with students to try to give them that help. The different kinds of support that you can receive—grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study—are all part of financial aid.

You can pay for college in more ways than you might expect! Estimating the cost of college is only one step. Another step is figuring out how much you can afford to pay. If college costs are more than you can afford, your remaining step is finding the money to pay the difference.

You will also need to plan for several other costs. One major cost is transportation. If you commute to campus each day, you may have to pay for gas, tolls, insurance, and maintenance for your car, or for public transportation.
