Articulation Agreements

Many colleges have special partnerships with other colleges, enabling students to transfer from one to the other. These partnerships, called articulation agreements, clearly explain the conditions students must meet in order to transfer colleges.
Statewide public university systems have guidelines for students who transfer between colleges that are part of the system. Community college students are provided certain guarantees that ensure they can transfer to the state’s four-year schools if they meet clearly defined conditions.
Some articulation agreements between colleges arereferred to as 2 + 2 programs. Students attend one college, usually a community college, for two years. If they fulfill the requirements of the agreement, they are guaranteed admission to the second college to complete their junior and senior years.
Other colleges have 3 + 2 programs. For example, you study physics and chemistry for three years at one school, then study engineering for two years at another. Such programs allow students to study at both a liberal arts college and an engineering college.
Some articulation agreements between colleges are focused on students in a specific program, such as engineering or nursing. Engineering science students at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, can transfer into their junior year at four-year colleges such as Clarkson University, Union College, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Their admission is guaranteed as long as they meet standards agreed on between Hudson Valley and the four-year college.Students who participate in such programs often receive more personal attention during their first two years of study, while also reducing their overall expenses.
